Philhellene Wazer from
Switzerland established the first improvised printing-house on Hydra. With the
assistance of the Tobazi brothers Hydra’s first newspaper the “Greek
Mirror”, was printed. Until 1824 the “Greek Mirror” rallied the Greek
fighting public with remarkable articles about Greek
Naval battles.
In 1824 the Ambroise Firmin Didot, sent typographic machines as a “Donation to
the Nation” to Hydra in order to organize a modern printing house. Important publications and newspapers such as “Friend of the Law”,
published by Joseph Kiape were published at this time. The press also published
the “Independent Gazette of Greece” edited by Pantelis K Pantelis between
1827 and 1828 as well as the French written weekly paper “L’Abeille Grecque”
edited by Joseph Kiape between 1827 and 1829. The final paper “Apollo”
published 1831 by Anastasios Polizoides was one of the strongest opposition
instruments used against governor Kapodistrias.
