The Hydrians, particularly
pious, paid much attention to the church in general, taking an active part in
every religious activity on the island.
The clergy of Hydra had
many important responsibilities. They judged civil differences, drew up legal
documents, made out tax lists for each parish and collected taxes on behalf of
the community.
On the island there are
many churches, chapels and monasteries. The focal point of Hydra was the holy
monastery of the Hydrians, which was built in 1643 and dedicated to the
Assumption. This was where the authorities and the people of the island gathered
to make important decisions. The society of Hydra was divided into three
classes, the Elders-Owners, Ship-Owners/Captains and the people.
During the 18th
Century the island was governed by the elders with support from the priests.
